Wildflowers persist into late Summer and mid-Fall, towering peaks of granite with jagged ribbons of color line every trail. The sparse and somewhat tortured forests of pine, fir, juniper and aspens are endlessly fascinating and so different from their more densely packed and lush counterparts on the western slopes. As the crow flies, this landscape is only 40 miles (65 km) away from the studio, but takes 4 hours of driving IF the pass over the mountains through Yosemite is open (late spring to Fall). The Summer temps on the East Side are 20 degrees cooler, which doesn’t hurt its appeal! In fact, I had a long list of possible, complicated names and chose "Wander" as the most appropriate: I had just happened to randomly pick a trail I had never tired before and just wandered into the Wilderness - the best way to choose a day hike IMHO!

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0740/4640/6915/files/wander-by-artist-monique-wales-turner-fine-art-4789125.jpg?v=1781260327
view-from-the-top
View from the Top

24 x 16 inches

Note from Artist:
California is known for its Oak Woodlands, which ring its interior ‘bathtub’ in incredible variety. Closely related to its more famous cousin, the Valley Oak (Quercus lobata), the Garry’s or Oregon White Oak (Quercus garryana) is just as magnificent in my opinion. With over 20 native oaks and as many recognized hybrids, these ancient, gnarled giants are a staple of the celebrated California landscape. This particular specimen is a favorite of my afternoon dog walks. And though it is on my neighbor’s land, my Raven family uses it to watch the sunset almost every day - we both feel it’s kind of ours by default.

16 x 10.5 inches

Note from Artist:
The small waterfall is one of my favorites and I pass it almost daily on my dog walks. You can find them starting to green up even before the snow has gone. They are so delicate and striking to look at, but really tough! I found this little guy growing in the path down by our seasonal creek. He probably wouldn’t have made it there for long, so I carefully took him up and laid him out to photograph for reference, keeping him moist the whole time. I transplanted him closer to the creek and away from the likelihood of heavy boots or deer hooves. The carving on this one was surprisingly difficult and tricky. The root system was amazingly intricate and the fronds were so tiny, but the challenge is what makes it fun! I noticed the trees of an orchard off the roadway were starting to bloom and the lovely silver / green of the leaves seemed to shimmer as I drove along. It’s still quite rural off of Highway 41, near Fresno, and I was able to just pull over, sit for a few minutes and draw out a quick study. It had never occurred to me what the blooming habits of olives were! The sketch made it onto lino with the intention of a single color line-type print, but I was so happy with the design, that I decided it would make an excellent demonstration of a 3-color reduction method, which lives in the studio for visitors to see.

10.5 x 8 inches

Note from Artist:
Miniature Lupine (aka Lupinus bicolor) is a diminutive plant compared to its bigger and showier cousins. Add in a pair of Hairy Woodpeckers and you have this beautiful memory made into a reduction relief linocut, "Fall Visitors". The mingled perfume of sagebrush and creosote still clung to me as I entered the isolated grove of Aspens, late holdouts in full Autumn color in a hidden crook of the mountains. The backlit canopy was aglow, shimmering and dancing above my head. The leaves added their susurration to the quiet melody of an unseen creek and the sharp calls and occasional drumming of a pair of Hairy Woodpeckers high up in that glorious mosaic of leaves. I never fail to stop and admire the view of the iconic Morro Rock in the distance in this first glimpse of the Pacific as I make my way from my Sierra home. Morro Rock is not necessarily always the most fantastic of formations up close, but in this view, it’s importance as a navigational marker and as a beloved point of reference for this area is completely realized. Called El Morro by the first Western explorers, it can be translated as ‘the nose’ or ‘the hill’ and either works. This view also highlights the beauty of our imperiled coastal oak woodlands. Over 300 native terrestrial vertebrate species use oak woodlands for food, cover or reproduction.
