Paiute Cutthroat were historically native only to a small section of the Silver King Creek in the Sierra Nevada in California. They had been wiped out of all of their native waters by a combination of overfishing, habitat degradation, and competition / hybridization with other introduced trout species by their Endangered status listing in 1966 - one of the first listed! Luckily for the Paiute trout, a few had been carried in buckets upstream above a natural barrier in 1912 by Basque shepherds. They would be extinct today if these shepherds had not inadvertently saved them in order to have a source of fresh fish in the Summer while grazing their flocks. Through a massive, long and somewhat controversial habitat restoration process, the Paiute trout were reintroduced back into their native waters in 2019."

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0740/4640/6915/files/swimming-upstream-by-artist-monique-wales-turner-fine-art-9041112.jpg?v=1786646227
