Gunnar Tryggmo: A Master of Watercolor
Named the 2024 Master Wildlife Artist, Gunnar Tryggmo is internationally recognized for his remarkable command of watercolor. A medium celebrated for its brilliance, and equally known for its unforgiving nature, watercolor demands confidence, patience, and precision. Gunnar embraces those challenges, creating paintings that feel effortless while capturing extraordinary atmosphere and life.
Inspired by the forests, coastlines, and wildlife of his native Sweden, Gunnar's work is distinguished by its elegance. The Woodson Art Museum honored Paul Rhymer as its 2023 Master Wildlife Artist, recognizing excellence in wildlife sculpture. Paul's path to sculpture was shaped by twenty-five years as a taxidermist and model maker at the Smithsonian Institution, where he developed an exceptional understanding of animal anatomy, movement, and form.
Today, that knowledge is transformed into expressive bronze sculptures that capture far more than physical accuracy. Rather than focusing on every feather or hair, Paul seeks the gesture, energy, and personality of each subject.
