"The Land That Raised Me" featuring Kathryn Mapes Turner

Turner Fine Art is proud to present the opening of "The Land That Raised Me", featuring Kathryn Mapes Turner, on September 8th. The exhibition brings together more than thirty years of Kathryn’s relationship with the landscape, wildlife, and rhythms of Jackson Hole.

The inspiration behind the collection, in Kathryn's words: 

I was raised by a place.

My earliest memories are rooted in the mountain valley of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where the Teton Range rises above the broad sweep of sagebrush, rivers, forests, and open sky. I grew up on my family’s historic ranch, riding its trails, drawing the animals, learning the rhythms of the seasons, and slowly coming to understand that the natural world was not simply the landscape around me. It was my teacher, my companion, and an essential part of who I am.

To live in a place like this is to become intimately acquainted with its details. I have spent a lifetime watching the movement of animals, listening to subtle changes in the landscape, learning the names of plants and trees, and noticing how light transforms the mountains from one moment to the next. The longer I look, the more there is to see. Familiarity has never diminished my sense of wonder; it has deepened it.

That attentiveness is at the heart of my work.

Painting is my way of paying attention. It is how I try to understand and honor a world that has given me so much. Each painting begins with observation, but it becomes something more—a meditation on belonging, beauty, memory, and the fragile relationship between human beings and the natural world. In this sense, every painting is a love letter to the land that raised me.

After more than thirty years of painting, I have come to understand that I am not trying simply to reproduce what I see. I am trying to express what it feels like to belong to a place—to carry its light, its seasons, its creatures, and its stories within me. The paintings are born from that lifelong relationship, from the intimacy of knowing a landscape deeply while still being humbled by all that remains unknowable.

The Land That Raised Me is, ultimately, an expression of gratitude. These paintings are my attempt to give something back to the place that taught me how to see.
